Concern for being thrown out of the Pit rather than the venerable bell
brought a riotous crowd to order. President Leon had Don Parrish lead
the Pledge and Father Tim once again delivered a stellar invocation.
Club secretary Larry Crismond delivered the minutes of the XC Board
meeting just held. Larry provided a rundown of upcoming Club events
including the next Great Invite Nite to be held on Thursday, October
16, at John Van Vorst’s house; a blood drive during lunch on the
third Wednesday in October; and Club participation in a Habitat for
Humanity construction project the third Saturday in October, with a
barbecue at XC Park for those who participate on a date to be
determined in the future. Coming up in November will be the annual
canoe trip to Arcadia and a road trip for the Dynamos to Miami
Seaquarium, both to be on the first weekend in November.
Coming before all those exciting events is the upcoming golf
tournament to be held at the Oak Tree Country Club on October 4th.
Chairman Dan Dowd provided a status report and emphasized
additional golfers are needed along with a few more sponsorships and
people willing to help out at the tournament itself. GET IN TOUCH WITH
DAN AS HE ENCOURAGED THE MEMBERSHIP TO DO A BETTER JOB IN
COMMUNICATING WITH HIM AS TO WHAT WE WILL OR WILL NOT BE DOING TO HELP
OUT. As you might remember from last year,
Dan runs a first-class event; let’s all step up and make this
year’s golf tournament a real success.
On the luncheon speaker’s front, Pompano Commissioner Kay McGinn
will be visiting us on September 24th; Diane Guidry of U of F External
Services will appear on October St and Attorney Ed McGee will be
speaking to us on October 22nd. Club
members Jim Horn, Dan Hobby and Marvin Henshaw have graciously
volunteered to procure speakers for October 29, November 12 and
November 26, respectively.
The
highlight of the meeting was certainly the first annual immediate past
president’s roast of Ole Coach himself. Befitting the standards of
the Club, the roast would have made Friar’s Club regulars blush in
embarrassment. Duran Brown emceed the event and circulated
unflattering pictures of Coach from old Pompano High yearbooks. John
Van Vorst recounted various highlights and lowlights of Coach’s year
as President and Chip North and Layne Heise delivered personal
tributes and stories, but clearly the highlight of the event was the
appearance of Miss ‘Eat Me” aka “Sugar” who was dressed as an
Exchange Club cheerleader and who embarrassed Coach with stories most
of which are unfit for print in this publication but some of which
stemmed from Coach’s tutelage of Sugar at the Motel 6 in what was
described as an “up-and-down” start to Sugar’s blossoming as a
young woman. President Leon presented Coach with the Club’s Man of
the Year Award in appreciation for what was truly a remarkable year of
achievement. For those of you who are wondering who played the part of
Sugar, this editor promised Sugar he would conceal her identity in
order to preserve what remaining dignity that individual has.
It
was reported Johnny Garneau is now home and should be rejoining us
shortly. John Ghee asked for prayers for those members of his family
socializing with Isabel on the Outer Banks, and Duran asked for
thoughts and prayers for his father-in-law, Byron Gordon who is not
feeling well.
Paul
Z. was this week’s shaking man and he shook Ian Sadler and this
week’s editor (not Bill Sullivan) had a brain fart and missed the
identity of the pot winner.
